Papier Mache Piggies

These are the Papier Mache Piggies we made for our school art show. I got this adorable idea from a second grade teacher at my sons school. We blew up a balloon and taped Dixie cups to it for the legs and snout and cardboard triangles for the ears. We mixed equal parts flour and water in a bowl, dipped strips of paper into the mixture and then covered the pigs. We only used one layer and that seemed to be enough. We mixed pink and white to create the color for our pigs and then painted them. I hot glued on a pipe cleaner tail when they were dry.

Mother's Day Books

 

My coworker makes these cute books every year after reading The Important Book. We used the sentence starter: The important thing about my mom is that... The last sentence was: But the most important thing about my mom is that... and they repeat the first sentence they wrote like in the book. We used six pages in all with the last page being about the author. This is the first year we've made them and I just loved them, they turned out so cute and their writing was amazing. The students only got one copy and had to try their best the first time. They all did such a great great job sounding out words and using their best handwriting.

I taped the magnets I made from their art to the inside cover.

 

 

Mother's Day Magnets

 I took a picture of the flower art the student's painted with their traced hand. I made the picture wallet size and then printed it on photo paper. I put the picture on a magnetic sheet and cut it out.

The magnetic sheets were $2 at Walmart and made 8 magnets.

I had some leftover magnetic sheets so I also made magnets with the self portraits they drew for our end of the year program.

Antonym Means Opposite

To kick off this lesson we played a game with antynom cards. I handed out word cards to the students, when I said go they had to find their opposite. We read them together and then played a few more times. I put them on the board and the students got to choose five they wanted to illustrate in their Antonym Means Opposite book.

Listening and Dice Math Stations

I just went to a workshop by Kim Sutton and LOVED all of it but what I am most thrilled about is the random number Cd's and a few new and exciting math stations at listening center.

All of her books and activities are fun and great independent practice for math stations as well as whole group.

 The students listened to the random number CD 0-9 at listening center, they had to double the number and then add one.

 

At this math station the students were listening to the random number Cd 0-100 and had to find those numbers on the a hundred chart.

Here...the students had to write the number in the even circle or the odd circle.

 

Anyway... the possibilities are endless.

These are also great dice books for math stations. The activities go from easy to hard and I have used it throughout the year.  It says k-3 but with the common core math it's just right for first graders.
